The certificate course on Craft Design has been introduced to help the artisans to utilize design as a strategic tool for developing new products suitable for contemporary market with the ethnic touch intact. The course has been developed under the guidance of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to be particularly suited to the requirements of Odisha’s artisans /crafts person to improve their products as per the market requirements.
The major objective of the course will be to help the craft persons to develop new and innovative products infused with an amalgamation of contemporary and traditional essence.
The duration of the course will be 1 year including one month project work and field visit.
Although most of the work including curriculum are in English, during theory and practical classes, the medium of learning will be both in Oriya and English. Classes will be held six days a week from 10a.m. to 5p.m. There will be no classes during Sundays and other Govt. holidays.
At the end of the course, the student is expected to undertake a project for duration of 1 month under the guidance of an in-house designer/faculty. This is mandatory for all the students in order to fulfill the requirements of the course curriculum.
At the end of each course, a jury consisting of three or four faculty members will evaluate the knowledge & work done by the student during the entire course. Based on this review, the evaluation jury gives an aggregate report comprising jury grades and clearly stating the overall performance in the education programme. On successful completion of the course the student will receive certificate from State Institute for Development of Arts and Crafts.

The content of the course include Introduction to Indian craft, Material and Skill workshop, Free hand drawing, Elements of Forms, Color and composition, Product photography, Use of Computers in Design, Element of Design, Fundamentals of craft entrepreneurship and marketing management, Visual Merchandising and Packaging.
